Atheists and Their Nutty Assumptions

Taken from a religion forum on the internet:

"If there were any truth to any religions, surely the gods would have imparted at least SOME knowledge to humans beyond the little they were aware of. Instead, 99% of the knowledge that's been acquired during the entire existence of humans has been acquired during the past 150 years, with the adoption of the modern scientific method."

First of all, what is this person qualifiying as "knowledge"? Just scientific advancement? And how was God supposed to impart the theories of Quantum Physics to ancient people?

"No religious "knowledge" has contributed one iota to the development of humans; quite the opposite. And still, as we gain this knowledge through science, religion fights tooth and nail against it."

This is simply stupid. Western civilization, which advanced technologically faster than any other society, had Christianity at its core. If this atheist's banter were even remotely true, the people of France and Germany should still be living in log cabins and cooking their food over open fires. Why do so many atheists labor under such inane delusions? Yet, they're all over the internet, calling believers idiots, and backing up their claims with dumb comments that are obviously false.

"Since religion is such a detriment to humans, why is it still around? Are we just in an in-between phase, or is it here to stay?"

If religion were "such a detriment to humans", the Dark Ages should never have ended. The fact is, Christians and Muslims preserved, protected, and made use of the knowledge that was collected, helping propel Western Society into a new age of Renaissance and Enlightenment.

It would really help if bantering atheists like this would try reading a book every once in a while.

They should stop crying "religion" and just say Christianity, they don't mind about the other religions, just christianity and Islam. A more specific and accurate description is theistic beliefs. Even then, this guys don't have a problem with paganism.

Also, they try to lump Christianity in with Islam. It is like Atheist John Loftus said:

"Science has a track record. Faith flies planes into buildings".

No, hate flies planes into buildings. And, where did Jesus say to do that in the Bible? That doesn't have a thing to do with Christianity.

Blah blah, "knowledge" is a universally understood.

"Just scientific advancement?"
Plus philosophy. Useless drivel about a 2000 year old book isn't knowledge. A philosopher can read all holy scriptures from all religions around the world and use the content of the scriptures if necessary. A believer can't - he has to rely on one single scripture. That's why theology is completely superfluous and can't add any matter of moment to anything. Never ever.

"Western civilization, which advanced technologically faster than any other society, had Christianity at its core"
Western society only advanced when religion was repelled. Age of Enlightenment - ever heared?

"If this atheist's banter were even remotely true, the people of France and Germany should still be living in log cabins and cooking their food over open fires."
Wtf are you even talking about? We in Germany are much less religious as the USA. And guess what - we're doing much better.
We have a working health care system, working unemployment benefits - unemployed people don't have to freeze in winter and they don't become homeless -, we have a working pension scheme. Our educational system is also very good and affordable - even for the poor.
And now again, the Scandinavian countries are doing even better, and they're even less religious.
And now look at souther europe: Countries like Greece, Portugal, Spain - they're the reason for the European sovereign-debt crisis. It's a catastrophy, and now guess how religious these countries are - yes, very religious!
And what about middle east, Africa, South america or great parts of Asia?

"Why do so many atheists labor under such inane delusions?"
I have no idea what you're talking about.

"If religion were "such a detriment to humans", the Dark Ages should never have ended."
For 90% of humanity the dark age has never ended. Moreover, it was never as bad as nowadays. The gap between rich and poor has never been so wide as today.

"The fact is, Christians and Muslims preserved, protected, and made use of the knowledge that was collected, helping propel Western Society into a new age of Renaissance and Enlightenment"
The fact is that they never did anything. Religion always tried to bear down knowledge.
Also, nowadays religions try to declare ethics - that originally came from humanism - as their own which is all the more ridiculous.

That's because these beliefs are predominant in western society. Also criticism of these other religions exists, that fact that you're too ignorant to get involved in that topic doesn't have any implication.

Where did that hate come from? Right, religion. So in the end it was religion that flew planes into buildings.

Please try reading a book or 2 about history and civilization before you come and drop off your anecdotal commentary.
